Deep in the heart...

Paging Mack Brown....

I know its September. I know you have a matchup with the Razorbacks in Arkansas. I know that you absolutely love the fact that Oklahoma is the #2 ranked team in the country and you're flying below the radar. Except...

You're not. You haven't beat the Sooners. Haven't even come close. You've outrecruited Oklahoma, you've had tremendous football players and have had, argubably, the Miami Hurricanes excepted, the most talented, as a whole football team over the last four or five years.

And the natives are getting restless. Wondering if you can handle the pressure of coaching football at the state university in Texas. Sorry Aggies, you're an agricultural school. And you did just get beat badly by Utah (who are d@mn good). To say football is important in Texas is akin to saying rice is important in China. So beating A&M the Friday after Thanksgiving isn't enough. Neither is exacting revenge on Arkansas. Because that rivalry is more important to the Piggies than it is to you.

And that's why it stings you. To Oklahoma, your Paul from the Wonder Years. The little geek they can string like a yo-yo. Its one thing to lose, its another to get dominated. 65-13. 35-24. 14-3 the last three years. And the latter two, well they weren't even that close. A top 10 team defeated before even taking the field.

And Mack, its on you. Need to prove you can do more than schmooze with high school coaches, and kiss mothers in order to get the best players to go to Austin. Otherwise you'll be joining Ricky Williams in a tour de force of Asia.

The most dynamic defensive player in the country in Derrick Johnson. A Heisman Trophy caliber running back in Cedric Benson. And a quarterback in Vince Young who has gifts. Serious, Michael Vick like gifts. You have to guide him. Play chess with Bob Stoops instead of chicken soup.

You may fly under the radar for September, Mack, but come October you have to show that your program has a soul.
